What is the background for the establishment the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE)?
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (NRE) was established on March 27, 2004.
NRE had undertaken few departments from four ministries:
Department of Director General of Lands and Mines , Department of Survey & Mapping Malaysia and National Institute
of Land and Survey from Ministry of Land and Co-operative Development.
Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia, Forest Research Institute Malaysia and Minerals and Geosciences Department Malaysia from Ministry of Primary Industries.
Department of Environment and Department of Wildlife & National Parks Peninsular Malaysia from Ministry of Science
Technology and Environment.
Department of Irrigation and Drainage and National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia from Ministry of Agriculture

The vision of NRE is to lead in sustainable management of natural resources and conservation of environment towards achieving national vision.

What is the NRE’s mission?
The mission of NRE is to provide exceptional services in management of natural resources and conservation of environment in line with national vision through :
- Integrated planning of activities and programmes by the departments and egencies
- Optimization of manpower utilization, hi-end technologies and financial resources
- Maximization of Natural resources development in order to support value added activities
- Enhancement and reinforcement of research and development activities
- Effective dissemination and sharing of technical inputs and database management
- Effective cooperation among public,private and international sectors
- Enhancement of expertise and knowledge through effective and systematic training modules.

What are the Ministry’s main objectives?
There are five major objectives outlined by NRE as follows:
- To ensure well balanced management of natural resources and environment in achieving sustainable development.
- To ensure efficient and effective service delivery system of natural resources and environment management.
- To ensure efficient and effective implementation of development projects
- To establish training and research and development (R&D) as an innovative exploration catalyst in natural resources
management and environmental conservation.
- To ensure a clean, safe, healthy, productive and polluted environment.

What are the major roles played by the departments (agencies) under NRE?
Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia
The Forestry Department of Peninsular Malaysia is responsible for the management, planning, protection and development of the Permanent Reserved Forest (PRF) in accordance with the National Forestry Act (NFA). On the other hand, the State Forestry Departments are responsible for the state forest resources as well as to plan and coordinate the development of wood based industries.
Department of Irrigation and Drainage
Department of Irrigation and Drainage provides professional and quality services in the planning, design, implementation and management of all irrigation, drainage, river engineering, coastal engineering, and hydrology and water resources programmes and projects. The services provided based on sound engineering principles, taking into account social and economic considerations.
Department of Environment
The Department of Environment (DOE) is focused on environment management in Malaysia. DOE’s main role is to prevent, control and abate pollution through the enforcement of the Environment Quality Act (EQA), 1974.
Department of Director General of Lands and Mines
Department of Director General of Lands and Mines is responsible to providing professional services with integrity in management and land administration in line with the National Development Policy.
Department Survey and Mapping Malaysia
Department Survey and Mapping Malaysia is one of the oldest government agencies in Malaysia where land surveying activity begin in 1885 with the establishment of State Survey Department of Johor. The Department Survey and Mapping Malaysia is responsible for surveying and mapping services and managing of geospatial data. It also produces other services related to surveying and mapping activities.

What are some of the major issues faced by NRE?
Some of the major issues faced by NRE and the departments (agencies) include:
Environmental Pollution
This could be probably due to lack of environmental awareness and education. The problem has further been compounded by haze and trans-boundary efforts have been incorporated to contain this problem. The pollution problem also includes river pollution. Furthermore, with regards to global warming and climate change issues, it is vital to further educate the public on ways and means to conserve the Earth.
Land issues
The critical issues in handling land include issues related to title registration, mortgage, private caveats, strata titles and land consolidation as guided by the National Land Code.
Illegal Logging
There is an urgent need to curb illegal logging activities, hence the need to enhance enforcement and use of advanced technology such as satellite images.
Illegal Wildlife trade
Due to the high value and demand from the international market, wildlife has become the main target by poachers.
